Customer Rating: Summary: expensive habit Comment: You buy it once for $90 and then next year you have to do the same thing, another $90. I don't know how much money you end up saving.
Customer Rating: Summary: Far from perfect. Useless email support. Comment: 2006 was my double state year. 6 months in one state and 6 months in another state. It was a good test of TurboTax's software. While most of the software seems to be quite good, but in some places they don't explain well what they mean.
The good:
- Paid over $140 for the software and extra e-filing fees instead of spending a little bit or much more with a tax specialist.
- Using TurboTax I polished my tax return to almost perfect, except that I was unable to claim home office because of software problems.
- E-filing went well and it was accepted by IRS.
The not so good:
- Error Check feature needs improvement
- Problems removing certain parts of the return after the software failed to do it correctly
- Was unable to make correction for one of the state returns. As a result had to erase everything and do it from scratch again.
- Because of problems in the software and long waiting hours to get support, it took me a week instead of 2 days
- While trying to claim home office TurboTax assigned a mortgage lender to my cash-purchased house in another state where I moved to. Explaining: First 6 months of the year I resided in one state, in a house that had a mortgage on, but the other 6 months I moved to a different state and purchased a cheap house for cash. Trying to file a home office TurboTax assigned mortgage lender from the previous state / house to the new state and house that was paid for. That didn't make sense to me, but there was no way to do it, so I had to delete the home office, which was impossible (to delete), so I had to begin the whole tax return from scratch erasing 2 days work.
- TurboTax never made me complete my state's "Business Personal Property Return" Form PT-100. I found out about it the hard way after I received a very high Fictures & Furniture Tax Bill (that was calculated as default for, as they said, a Walmart-sized company). It was done because I failed to file the form PT-100 which I did not know about, cause either TurboTax did not inform me about the form and/or the state's mail piece failed to reach my mail box. The state's DOR was kind enough to let me appeal and correct my office furniture and fixture's value and pay my tax bill without paying a significant penalty.
- Called TurboTax Support by phone, was told the waiting time will be 60 minutes (2 hours!). After 25 minutes I gave up, got tired of the phone music and emailed the support.
- TurboTax e-mail Support is pretty much useless and not only. They can't spell correctly and they have no logic in what they say. Here's a response to my inquiry about the abovementioned form PT-100 from TurboTax Support's specialist recently:
Dear ...,
Thank you for contacting TurboTax Customer Service & Support.
I understand that you have been sent a notice from your state on not filing the form PT-100. We are more than happy to assist you with this!.
..., have you entered the value of the furnitures and fixtures last year?. If so, this will automatically carried over from the Federal interview to the State. The state will not promtpt you to file any form if you have reported the $25,000 value on the program. The TurboTax automatically prints or generate the form you are suppose to file on Federal and the State.
I am glad that we have resolved your issue today. You may receive a survey from us through email in approximately 24 hours asking you about my performance on today's contact, as well as comments you may have in regards to the TurboTax product. So we can continue with our promise to provide our customers with the best support available, please take a few minutes to complete the survey.
Respectfully,
03_....
MY COMMENT: Most of his message is water and bla-bla-bla and he is glad that they have resolved my issue today... I don't think it's resolved. Support can be quick, it can be willing to help, but if it will be not knowledgeable and professional enough, it will remain useless.
Customer Rating: Summary: Turbo Tax Warranty - Not Comment: If ths following is your idea of good product support, then by all means, purchase Turbo Tax. While using the software, I had no idea that this limitation to Turbo Tax existed. As for me, my next purchase will be Tax Cut.
The only provision for claiming excess railroad retirement tax on Form 1040 is for tier 1 withholding. The excess can be derived from a combination of railroad employers or in connection with a railroad and non-railroad employer. The program does properly record the excess of the tier 1 tax on line 67 Form 1040 as a credit against income taxes. It does nothing with the tier 2 excess tax. This must claimed separately, as you noted in your email, on form 843 which is not supported by the Turbo Tax software.
The software's help does contain information regarding tier 1 and 2 railroad retirement withholding. The help clearly indicates that only tier 1 may be claimed as a credit against current year income taxes. It goes on to state, "You cannot claim a refund for excess tier 2 RRTA tax on Form 1040. Instead use Form 843."
Customer Rating: Summary: First time doing turbo tax Comment: I began by entering my information on the first section of the program. I was filing a late 2006 return due Oct 15 2007. Then I saved it, but I couldn`t get it back when I was ready to begin again. I said heck with it and did the taxes the old long hand method. Does someone want to send me a 2007 turbo tax personal and business state and federal program in compensation? Dave Barnett, OLema CA 94950
Customer Rating: Summary: Good product, if a little obtuse in execution. Comment: Turbotax is a product I've used for many years, and when I did taxes as a business, I was an early user of the "Pro" version. It's an outstanding program, with enough safeguards worked in to keep you from making mistakes on the ever-more complex tax forms. The only problem is the number of steps one must take to do anything, but I suspect that is necessary, since each entry has to be accurate, and the software itself must monitor your accuracy. Sometimes (as with K-1's and some other forms), the software actually falls down a bit, but if you don't know how to input the information in the first place, perhaps you are better off with someone else doing your taxes for you.
In any event, for about $90 Federal and State, I got a program that created and printed the tax forms I needed. Typical cost, I think, for an accountant for a return like mine?--$500-$1,000.
It's good software!
