Customer Rating: Summary: Just in time! Comment: Got the ice cream maker in tome for Father's day, love this product, have made two batches so far, got the Ben and Jerry' s cookbook to go with it. Really makes a difference when bowl us frozen for a full 24 hours prior to maing. Just made chocolate frozen custard with Heath bits, so creamy and delicious. It is great knowing what ingredients are going into our ice cream when we make it ourselves. I am looking forward to making some frozen yogurt soon. Great buy, glad I shopped around and bought this one. Very happy with this purchase.
Customer Rating: Summary: Healthy Eating Comment: With the Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, ice cream or sorbet can be made with healthy ingredients to ones' own taste in only a short time. The recipe book offers wonderful varieties. This was one of my more sensible purchases and would highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good mixer, somewhat loud Comment: We'd had a similar ice cream maker, just a bit smaller, for several years before it finally gave out on us. We got this slightly larger one and have been quite happy with it for several months - we make ice cream about once a week and this does a very nice job. We have a sugar free (very low carb) recipie we've been using for years and it churns up in about 23 minutes ready for soft serve style and then we freeze the rest for later in the week.
I'm pretty sure most folks that are complaining about the ice cream not being "done" properly are either dealing with a freezer that's not cold enough or are expecting something a bit unrealistic. If you want hard ice cream like you get at the store you'll have to refreeze your batch - it comes out pretty soft folks... it's supposed to. I'm betting more folks have freezer temperature control issues - go buy a cheap freezer thermometer from your local hardware store - we found our was running a bit warm and adjusted - made a difference.
This unit is somewhat louder than the Braun we had before - but then again it's churning more product so there ya go. We use it in a room that we can close the door to while it's running so we aren't terribly annoyed by it but if you'll be in the same room it'll be awfully hard to ignore while it's grinding away.
Customer Rating: Summary: Misleading description Comment: This machine is advertised as being "fully automatic" and as "providing ice cream in as little as 25 minutes."
How is it automatic if you have to freeze a large bowl for 6 to 24 hours?
How is it ready in as little as 25 minutes if you have to prep a day ahead by freezing the bowl?
I just received this machine but I'm going to return it. I have a small freezer and there is no way I can leave a large bowl laying around in it just in case I want to make some ice cream.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Ice Cream Maker Comment: Not as powerful as the Kitchenaid attachment but a very nice maker I found at Costco for $[...]. It is noisey but livable for the only 30 min it takes to make icecream.
I find the freezer bowl (walled with some kind of phase change material that absorbs heat from the ice cream mix) does better when it is frozen to colder temps so I set my freezer for its coldest temperature (-6 deg F). There should be no "sloshing" of the material in the wall of the bowl--is should be solid or you will get soft icecream.
The little recipe book is nice but it is for making "old fashioned" ice cream--that has a lot to be desired by today's standards. If you want really creamy texture add 1/8 teaspoon of Xanthan Gum (order it here on Amazon... or John's Red Mill (Google this). Some groceries have it in stock like Bloom Grocery. This stuff will really improve your ice cream receipe and is is healthy.
Try some Stevia liquid as a sweetener for diabetics and those just watching the calories. The only safe, natural, non-caloric sweetner on the market I think. Get it at a health food store (or here on Amazon) and use it 1 Teaspoon = 1 cup sugar. You will get a very clean and good tasting ice cream out of it. I trie this on my kids without telling them it had no table sugar in it... they would have not even noticed.
You can run 2 qt pre-mixes from Walmart, etc. ($[...]) through this with whole milk and it makes a nice "Ice Milk" as well. Watch out for the swelling affect from excess adispose tissue that will accumalate in various places on your body... this is a sign of overuse of this machine.
