Customer Rating: Summary: Microbrewery System Comment: Easy to use, and all reusable, which means that (except for the refill packs) you don't need to continually spend more $ to keep enjoying the product! It was a gift for my husband, he was thoroughly enthused.
Customer Rating: Summary: This can make good brew if.... Comment: Mr. Beer can be a good introduction on how to brew beer without investing too much money in an entire kit. I returned to brewing beer after a 20 year hiatus 2 months ago by buying Mr. Beer from this site. I did consult several "home brewing forums" online to find some of the best ways to get the most out of Mr. Beer.
#1: Be patient and let your beer stay fermenting for 2 weeks at a minimum. I recommend waiting 3 weeks.
#2 You can bottle these with very little yeast sediment by buying a 3 gallon plastic bucket (food grade if possible) and a racking cane with a syphon hose. Instead of adding sugar to each bottle directly, use 2 oz priming sugar and a cup of boiling water. Mix the sugar with the water and wait a few minutes. Pour this into your bucket and then use the siphon to move the beer from the Mr. Beer fermentor into the bucket allowing the beer to mix with the sugar. Try to not stir up the mixture too much. Be gentle with it at this stage. Once the Mr. Beer is empty of the beer sediment will be left in the container and not in your bucket. Bottle the beer and give it 3 weeks at around 70 F. After this time place a few bottles in your fridge for 3-4 days and then drink.
The results I tasted last week were very good for this kit. My wife to be thought this was better than most macro-brews and wants to serve some to our guests at out wedding in July.
The recipe kits are not cheap but if you get the unhopped liquid malt extract for a few dollars more than the booster pack you may be satisfied spending the extra $3 per batch.
Do a google search for home brew forum and you can find a site with many threads just about Mr Beer. This site answered many questions and told me that having more patience than just a few weeks from start to finish really made things pay off. Rushing this process may result in making bad beer.
Customer Rating: Summary: fantastic! Comment: I found this kit at a thrift store for 15. So i bought it and followed the instructions. Amazing! I had no idea it would turn out so well. I had a ridiculous amount of carbonation though (head filled up an entire tallboy!). I'm in the process of brewing some hard cider and some red beer now! Actually I already bottled it. If you take your time and sanitize like the instructions say you should not have any problems. Its so much cheaper than buying beer from a store. In fact I'm brewing beer for my wedding!
Customer Rating: Summary: Worth it! Comment: This is the most used Christmas present from 2008. The supplier was great and got it plenty of time.
Customer Rating: Summary: A wonderful little 'learning' kit. Comment: What more can one say about a kit that is only $40 and includes everything you will need to make 3 two-gallon batches of beer? While it isn't the highest quality beer, it is a fantastic learning experience and can certainly whet your appetite for homebrewing. For me, this kit was only the beginning of my exploration into the world and art of home beermaking. I have since bought a few books, higher quality equipment and begun experimenting using different malt, hop and yeast combinations from my local homebrew supply store (which you can do with this kit as well).
Prior to this kit, I really didn't consider myself a huge beer aficionado...just a casual enjoyer of a nice cold pint. While I am not a master brewer now, learning about brewing has increased my appreciation of what goes into the making of beer and the long and fascinating history behind it.
Right now we are in a heyday of home and micro-brewing with new local breweries opening constantly. Go ahead and get this kit, now is a great time to learn about humanity's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage. And let's not forget that in these days of 'going green,' making your own brew is the environmentally friendly way to go.
So educate yourself and save the environment while you're at it!!! Drink homemade beer!!!
